Travel log 4

Kitchen, pen and ink, 2008

This is my favorite piece from the farm, and also the one I spent the most time drawing. It is a view of the outdoor kitchen in the worker's quarters where I stayed. I executed this differently than most drawings that I do. Instead of trying to work the piece evenly all over, I drew a basic skeleton of large objects and planes to define the space, and then I filled in the smaller objects and details from the bottom up. Each object was drawn in isolation from the ones around it, and each section of the kitchen was drawn in isolation. I don't necessarily think that is the best way to do it, but it worked for this piece. It was like I was picking up each object, one by one, examining it, and then putting it back in it's place. It also reminded me of dusting, or wiping down a counter, in which each object is delicately lifted and cleaned off.

Carrizo, pen and ink, 2008

I do not think this drawing is particularly successful, it is hard to figure out where things are in space, but it is a somewhat decent documentation of my time on the farm. The room had no glass windows, but instead wooden panels that opened up on hinges. All of these were covered with pamphlets and posters from the nearby town. The room also had corrugated tin roofing, which was beautifully loud during rain. This piece includes the infamous rubber boots (see previous post), and the half-finished cane grass panel I was working on at the time.
