Quito part II

7 x 9 1/2 inches
acrylic, pencil and paper on cardboard

This is the collage that subsequently followed after the watercolor from Quito. Many of the colors were originally painted onto paper, as color chips (see post below), and I continued to mix new shades and hues as I went along. Working with a fixed palette is interesting, especially when using a watercolor as my source. It is impossible to recreate all of the blends and bleeds of the paint, and while that is not my goal, I do try to use the colors that I see in the painting, making this a process of simplification and down sizing. I also get to find hidden colors in the paint, and then emphasize them in the collage. Small changes are made and decisions have to be made when transferring from one medium to another.
I intend to continue this series with another collage, taking the down sizing to another level. Each time that I go a step further, by using a previous work as the source for the newest one, the original image is lost a little bit more. I love seeing the progression that is made, and all of the wonderful shapes and relationships that can evolve.
